What to expect at the Canadian citizenship test
Knowing what happens on test day removes surprises and helps you focus on the questions. Here is a step-by-step overview of the citizenship test appointment.
Before the test
- IRCC mails a notice with your test date, time, and location — usually a local IRCC office.
- Bring your Permanent Resident card, the notice of appointment, two pieces of personal ID, and all passports and travel documents used since becoming a permanent resident.
- Arrive early. Late arrivals may need to reschedule.
At the test centre
- An IRCC officer checks your identity and documents.
- You may be asked basic questions in English or French to confirm your language ability.
- Personal items (phones, bags, notes) are stored before the test.
During the test
- You answer 20 multiple-choice or true/false questions on a computer or on paper.
- You have 30 minutes to finish.
- Questions cover all five Discover Canada topics: history, government, rights, geography, and symbols.
- There is no penalty for guessing — answer every question.
After the test
- You need 15 out of 20 correct answers (75%) to pass.
- If you pass, you will be invited to a citizenship ceremony to take the Oath of Citizenship.
- If you do not pass, IRCC will schedule a second test or an interview with a citizenship officer.
Tips for test day
- Get a good night's sleep — avoid last-minute cramming.
- Read each question carefully. Some answers look similar but differ in detail.
- If unsure, eliminate obviously wrong answers and choose the best remaining option.
