Canadian citizenship test eligibility requirements
Not everyone who applies for Canadian citizenship needs to take the test. Here are the eligibility rules set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
Who must take the citizenship test
Adult applicants aged 18 to 54 at the time of signing their application must take the citizenship test. The test covers knowledge of Canada and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.
Basic eligibility for Canadian citizenship
- Permanent resident status — you must be a permanent resident of Canada.
- Physical presence — you must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (3 years) during the 5 years before your application.
- Tax filing — you must have filed Canadian income taxes for at least 3 years within the 5-year period.
- Language ability — you must demonstrate adequate knowledge of English or French (for applicants aged 18 to 54).
- No criminal prohibitions — certain criminal convictions or charges may prevent you from becoming a citizen.
Who is exempt from the test
- Applicants under 18 years of age.
- Applicants 55 years of age or older at the time of signing the application.
Exempt applicants do not need to take the knowledge test or meet the language requirement, but must still meet all other eligibility criteria.
Physical presence calculator
IRCC provides an online physical presence calculator to help you determine if you meet the residency requirement. Time spent as a temporary resident or protected person before becoming a PR counts as half-days (up to 365 days).
