How to study for the Canadian citizenship test

Passing the citizenship test takes repetition. Most applicants succeed when they study in small daily sessions, review mistakes, and simulate the real exam format. Here is a simple plan that works with topic practice and our timed practice exam.

Step 1 — Read Discover Canada, then practice one topic

Start with a single area such as History & Peoples. Read the answer key first if you are new, then switch to practice mode with instant feedback.

Step 2 — Study in your test language

The official test is in English or French. Our practice questions are in English; use Discover Canada in your preferred official language when studying the source material.

Step 3 — Track weak topics

Your home page shows accuracy by topic. Spend extra time on categories marked “Needs review” before moving on.

Step 4 — Take full practice exams

When you feel comfortable with individual topics, take the timed practice exam. Aim to pass several times in a row at 15 out of 20 before your test day.

Step 5 — Review the night before

Skim answer keys for your weakest topics. Avoid cramming new material — reinforce what you already know.
